Golden Winter Light at Warnham – A Peaceful Afternoon Session
I spent a peaceful late afternoon at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 3 January 2026, making the most of that rich, golden winter light just before sunset. It was one of those sessions where the light does most of the storytelling — warming the water, softening reflections, and adding depth to every subject.
With patches of ice still lingering across parts of the lake, the mix of texture and colour created a beautiful setting to end the day.
Water and Ice – Subtle Winter Drama
A Coot carefully navigated the shifting boundary between open water and thin ice. Watching it adjust its footing and movement across the changing surface added a quiet sense of winter realism to the scene.
Nearby, Egyptian Geese moved gracefully across the lake. Taking the opportunity for head shots allowed their intricate facial markings and subtle colour variations to stand out clearly in the softer light.
Stillness and Reflection
A Grey Heron stood perfectly still against the reeds, framed naturally by the winter vegetation. In late afternoon light, their pale plumage takes on a gentle warmth, contrasting beautifully with the muted browns of the reedbed.
Male Mallard Ducks provided both portrait opportunities and movement. Close head shots highlighted the iridescent green of their plumage, while calmer moments offered rich reflections in the deepening blue water. At other times, wings in motion brought bursts of action to an otherwise tranquil setting.
One particular male Mallard, bathed fully in warm golden sunlight, became a standout image of the day — the low sun intensifying colour and adding glow to the scene.
Calm Compositions
A Mute Swan rested peacefully with its head tucked back, perfectly mirrored in the still water. Those moments of symmetry are always satisfying — simple, balanced, and quietly elegant.
A Female Shoveler moved gently among the reeds, her reflection adding depth and context to the frame. The calm surface of the lake made these softer compositions particularly rewarding.
A Touch of Mystery – Water Rail
To round off the session, I caught a brief glimpse of the elusive Water Rail. Never an easy species to photograph, even a short sighting adds a sense of intrigue to the day. Their secretive nature makes every encounter feel earned.
A Serene End to the Day
What made this session special wasn’t just the variety of species, but the atmosphere. The shimmering reflections, the blend of ice and water, and the warm glow of late afternoon light combined to create a calm, almost reflective mood.
Ending the day surrounded by wildlife and soft winter colour felt like the perfect conclusion to a January visit at Warnham — peaceful, rewarding, and full of quiet detail.
Another memorable winter afternoon at the reserve.
