Great Crested Grebe Taking Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

During my visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 20th July 2025, I had the pleasure of watching a Great Crested Grebe practicing its flying skills. These elegant water birds are usually seen gliding effortlessly across the water, so seeing one take to the air was something truly special.

As I stood by the lake, the grebe began to sprint across the surface, its feet skimming the water with incredible speed. The power in its movement was remarkable — a burst of energy that ended in a graceful lift-off. Within seconds, it was soaring just above the waterline, its wings beating with surprising strength for a bird more often known for diving than flying.

Moments like this remind me why I love photographing wildlife at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. There’s always something new to experience — from the subtle behaviour of birds to the ever-changing light over the water. Each visit offers a fresh story waiting to be captured through the lens.

If you’re a wildlife photographer or simply a nature enthusiast, Warnham is a place that never disappoints. Whether it’s a grebe taking flight, dragonflies dancing in the reeds, or the quiet call of a moorhen, the reserve is alive with beauty and movement.
