Wild Weather, Resilient Birds – Warnham

Sometimes, the best wildlife moments happen when the weather is at its most challenging. On January 26th, 2025, I braved the wind and rain at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, and to my surprise, so did the birds. Despite the stormy conditions, these resilient creatures continued their routines, each feather slick with raindrops but undeterred by the weather.

The rain provided a moody atmosphere, adding drama to the scenes as the birds seemed to carry on with life as usual. It was a reminder of the tenacity and adaptability of nature, even when conditions are far from perfect.

Here are some of the highlights from the stormy day:

  • A Blackbird with water droplets glistening on its back, unfazed by the downpour. It perched confidently in the wet landscape, a true testament to nature's perseverance.

  • A Chaffinch, soaked but still showing off its vibrant plumage. Despite being drenched, the striking colors of its feathers stood out beautifully against the stormy backdrop.

  • A Goldfinch, standing out against the grey skies. This little bird seemed to find its own moment of brightness amidst the dark clouds, a pop of color in the gloom.

  • A Great Tit, fluffed up against the wind. Its puffed-up feathers helped it brave the gusty conditions, and it kept darting around looking for food, fully focused on the task at hand.

  • A Pheasant, striding confidently through the wet grass. Even in the rain, it moved gracefully, its bold and colorful plumage contrasting sharply with the misty, rain-soaked grasslands.

The rain made for some atmospheric shots that capture nature at its rawest. It was one of those days where the elements worked in harmony with the wildlife, creating the perfect setting for moody and evocative photography.

At Warnham, there’s always something special about the way nature unfolds, no matter the weather. Sometimes, the stormiest days offer the most beautiful and powerful glimpses of wildlife in its purest form.

If you're a wildlife photographer, or simply enjoy birdwatching, remember: rain or shine, nature always has a story to tell.
