Little Grebe and Chick at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Heart-warming Wildlife Moment
On the 26th of July 2025, during a visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve, I had the privilege of witnessing a truly special wildlife moment — a Little Grebe with its chick riding on its back.
The scene unfolded quietly on the water, with the parent gliding gracefully while the tiny chick clung to its feathers for warmth and safety. Not far behind, another parent paddled nearby, attentive and alert. It wasn’t long before the chick began calling softly, signalling that it wanted to be fed — a touching display of communication and care between parent and offspring.
Watching this behaviour up close offered a fascinating insight into the family dynamics of Little Grebes, one of the most charming and secretive waterbirds found across the UK. Their nurturing instincts and constant teamwork are a joy to observe, especially in peaceful reserves like Warnham where they can thrive undisturbed.
Moments like these remind me why I love wildlife photography — each encounter tells a story of connection, patience, and life in the wild.
If you ever get the chance to visit Warnham Local Nature Reserve, keep an eye out for these delightful birds. With a bit of luck, you might just witness the same heart-warming sight!
