Winter Activity on the Water at Warnham

On 21st December 2025, I spent another rewarding day at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, this time focusing on the constant movement and life out on the water. Even in the heart of winter, the lake was full of energy — from sudden bursts of action to calm, graceful moments.

A Coot in Full Sprint

One of the most dynamic moments of the day came from a Coot sprinting across the water.

There’s something brilliant about watching a coot power forward like that — feet slapping the surface, wings half-raised for balance, water spraying behind it. It all happens quickly, but when you freeze that moment in a frame, you really appreciate just how athletic these birds are.

Mallards and Winter Energy

Nearby, a female Mallard was happily splashing and preening.

Preening sessions always offer great opportunities for photographs — droplets flying, wings stretching, and those brief expressive poses in between movements. Even the most familiar birds can provide fantastic moments when the light and timing come together.

A Flash of Colour – Mandarin Duck

A real standout, as always, was the male Mandarin Duck.

In the softer winter light, the colours of the plumage seem even richer. The oranges, purples and crisp white markings create an almost unreal contrast against the muted tones of the lake. It’s always a privilege to photograph such a striking bird in a natural setting.

Grace and Power on the Lake

The larger species brought their own presence to the session.

A Mute Swan gliding in flight over the water added elegance to the scene — wide wings catching the light, reflection shimmering below.

Those playful bursts of movement create fantastic textures on the water’s surface — ripples, spray, and reflected light all combining in a single frame.

A Day Full of Movement

What stood out most about the day was the contrast — explosive energy from the coot, relaxed preening from the mallard, bold colour from the mandarin, elegance from the swan, and playful splashing from the tufted duck.

Winter at Warnham never feels quiet when you take the time to watch. There’s always something happening on the water — sometimes subtle, sometimes dramatic — but always rewarding.

Another enjoyable visit, and another reminder of why I keep returning to this special reserve.
