A Stunning Male Mandarin Duck at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place that never fails to surprise me, offering fantastic opportunities to observe a wide variety of wildlife throughout the year. During my visit on 28th February 2026, I was fortunate enough to spend some time photographing one of the reserve's most striking visitors – a magnificent male Mandarin Duck.

The Mandarin Duck is undoubtedly one of the most colourful and distinctive waterfowl you can encounter in the UK. Seeing one up close almost feels surreal, with its vibrant orange sails, deep chestnut breast, bold white facial markings, and intricate feather patterns creating an appearance that seems more like a work of art than a wild bird. No matter how many times I see one, I'm always amazed by the incredible detail and richness of its plumage.

This particular bird was calmly gliding across the water, completely at ease in its surroundings. Its relaxed behaviour gave me plenty of opportunities to photograph it from different angles, allowing the beautiful colours and fine feather detail to really stand out. Conditions like these are a wildlife photographer's dream, where patience is rewarded and the subject allows you to fully appreciate its natural beauty.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite places to visit, not only because of the variety of species it attracts but also because every trip offers the chance to experience moments like this. Whether it's common woodland birds, elusive wildlife, or spectacular visitors such as the Mandarin Duck, there's always something worth photographing.
