Beautiful Demoiselles at Woods Mill Nature Reserve – A Stunning Spring Encounter

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Woods Mill Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to experience the changing seasons, and spring brings a real sense of excitement as returning migrants arrive and wildlife activity increases. During my visit on 4th May 2026, I had the opportunity to spend some time photographing one of our most familiar spring visitors — the Chiffchaff.

These small and energetic warblers can be surprisingly difficult to spot as they move through fresh green foliage, searching for insects among the branches. Their distinctive “chiff-chaff” song is often the first clue that they are nearby, giving away their presence long before they appear. After spending time watching and listening, I was fortunate enough to capture a few images as this Chiffchaff moved through the trees, busy feeding and exploring its surroundings.

Spring is always a special time at Woods Mill Nature Reserve, with the woodland coming alive as migratory birds return and the breeding season gets underway. Moments like this highlight how much wildlife can be found in our local nature reserves, often hidden away until we slow down and take the time to look.

It was a rewarding morning with a lovely encounter and another reminder of why spending time outdoors with a camera is always worthwhile.
