Common Firecrest at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Tiny Woodland Gem

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I always enjoy visiting, with its varied habitats offering opportunities to encounter a wonderful range of British wildlife throughout the year. My visit on 2nd May 2026 provided a fantastic opportunity to photograph one of the UK’s smallest and most colourful birds — the Common Firecrest.

These tiny woodland birds are full of energy, constantly moving through the trees and undergrowth as they search for food. Their size and speed make them a real challenge to photograph, often appearing for only a few seconds before disappearing among the leaves. However, with patience and careful observation, I was fortunate enough to capture a variety of images showing their incredible detail and vibrant plumage.

The highlight was capturing their distinctive fiery orange crown stripe, the feature that gives the Common Firecrest its name. Watching these beautiful little birds moving from branch to branch, displaying their bright colours in the woodland light, is always a rewarding experience and a reminder of the importance of taking time to appreciate the smaller species around us.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite locations for wildlife photography, proving that even our local woodlands can provide unforgettable encounters. Moments like this with a Common Firecrest highlight just how much incredible wildlife can be found right on our doorstep.
