Little Egret Fishing and Preening at Warnham Local Nature Reserve
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy returning throughout the year. On the 5th of July 2026, I spent some time with one of the reserve's most elegant residents, a Little Egret, as it went about its daily routine.
For much of my visit, the Little Egret was focused on fishing in the shallow water, carefully stalking its prey with slow, deliberate movements before suddenly striking with remarkable speed and accuracy. It's fascinating to watch how patient these birds are, taking their time as they search for the slightest movement beneath the surface. Observing this behaviour up close provided some excellent opportunities to capture the precision and grace that make Little Egrets such rewarding photographic subjects.
Later, the bird flew onto a nearby stick, where it settled down to preen and ruffle its feathers. These quieter moments are just as interesting as the action, revealing the importance of feather maintenance and offering a completely different perspective of the species. With the egret relaxed and the soft summer light illuminating its white plumage, it was a wonderful opportunity to photograph its elegant features and delicate detail.
Visits like this are a reminder that even familiar species can provide fresh photographic opportunities. By taking the time to observe rather than simply searching for something rare, it's often possible to capture a variety of behaviours that tell a much richer story about the wildlife around us. Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite places to enjoy these moments and appreciate the beauty of Britain's wetland birds.
