Male and Female Redpoll at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always full of surprises, and each visit offers the chance to discover something special. On the 7th of March 2026, I was lucky enough to spend some time photographing both a male and female Redpoll, creating a wonderful opportunity to capture the differences between the two.

The male Redpoll was particularly striking, with its vibrant red crown and soft pink wash across the chest adding a beautiful splash of colour to the winter landscape. The female had a more understated beauty, with delicate streaking and softer tones that perfectly highlight the subtle differences between the sexes. Seeing them together, feeding quietly, made it possible to appreciate the unique characteristics of each bird.

Redpolls are always a rewarding species to encounter, and having the chance to watch them at close range was a real privilege. Moments like this are what make regular visits to local nature reserves so enjoyable — you never quite know what might appear or when a special wildlife encounter will happen.
