Mallard in the Rain at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and on the 1st of March 2026, the weather played a huge part in creating one of my favourite images from the day. While many photographers might head home when the rain arrives, these conditions can often provide some of the most dramatic opportunities.

During the visit, I watched a male Mallard powering through the rain, its wings beating strongly as it flew across the reserve. The falling raindrops added an extra layer of atmosphere, transforming an everyday scene into something far more striking. It was one of those moments where everything simply came together – the light, the weather, the timing, and the bird all combining to create a photograph that tells a story.

Rain can completely change the mood of an image, adding texture, movement, and a sense of energy that simply isn't there on a clear day. Capturing fast-moving wildlife in these conditions isn't always easy, but the challenge makes the results all the more rewarding. Images like this remind me that some of the best wildlife photography opportunities come when the weather is at its least inviting.

I'm really pleased with how this photograph turned out. It captures not only the power and elegance of the Mallard in flight but also the atmosphere of the moment, proving that sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters happen when you embrace the conditions rather than avoid them.
