Mute Swan Preening and Wing Flapping at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I return to throughout the year, always offering the chance to observe familiar species displaying fascinating natural behaviours. During my visit on 3rd May 2026, I spent some time watching and photographing one of the reserve’s elegant Mute Swans.

The swan spent a peaceful period on the water, carefully preening and grooming its feathers to keep them in perfect condition. Watching this detailed routine is a reminder of the importance of these everyday behaviours, which are essential for maintaining healthy plumage and helping birds stay ready for life on the water.

After finishing its grooming, the Mute Swan rose up and began drying itself with a series of powerful wing flaps. The display was impressive as the huge white wings stretched out and beat against the air, sending droplets of water flying in every direction. Capturing these moments of movement and behaviour is one of the most rewarding parts of wildlife photography, especially when you can freeze a fleeting moment that would otherwise pass unnoticed.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide incredible opportunities to observe wildlife at close range, from dramatic displays like this to the quieter moments that often happen when you simply take the time to watch. Every visit brings something different, and it is these small encounters that make returning throughout the year so worthwhile.
