Photographing a Common Field Grasshopper in Flight at Bushy Park

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every new location brings fresh opportunities to experiment, and my first visit to Bushy Park on 19th July 2026 was no exception. Rather than focusing on a stationary subject, I decided to take on a challenge that required quick reactions, careful timing, and a fair amount of patience.

One of the highlights of the day was attempting to photograph a Common Field Grasshopper as it launched itself through the air. Unlike birds, whose flight can often be anticipated by their body language, a grasshopper's jump happens in an instant. Predicting exactly when it would spring into action, while keeping the camera locked onto such a small subject, proved to be much more difficult than I had expected.

After plenty of missed opportunities and a lot of trial and error, I finally managed to capture the moment. The resulting photograph isn't perfectly sharp, but considering it was my first attempt at this type of image, I'm genuinely pleased with how it turned out. Every new photographic challenge teaches you something, and this experience was no different. It gave me a much better understanding of timing, autofocus performance, and just how quickly these tiny insects can move.

Wildlife photography isn't always about coming home with a technically perfect image. Sometimes it's about pushing yourself to try something new, learning from the experience, and enjoying the process along the way. This photograph marks the beginning of what I hope will become another rewarding area of wildlife photography, and it's certainly a technique I'll continue to practise on future visits to Bushy Park.
