Photographing Swifts at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Summer is one of the best times of year to photograph some of the UK's most exciting aerial species, and a visit to Ifield Mill Pond on 5th July 2026 provided the perfect opportunity to spend time with one of my favourites – the Swift.

Swifts are among the most remarkable birds to photograph. They spend almost their entire lives on the wing, eating, drinking, and even sleeping in flight. Their incredible speed and agility make them one of the most challenging subjects for any wildlife photographer, as they twist and turn through the sky in pursuit of flying insects with astonishing precision.

Photographing Swifts requires patience, fast reactions, and a willingness to accept that many attempts won't quite work out. Their unpredictable flight paths and sheer speed mean every successful image feels well earned. It's this challenge that keeps drawing me back each summer, as every encounter offers another opportunity to improve and capture these incredible birds in action.

Ifield Mill Pond proved to be an excellent location to watch these aerial masters as they swept effortlessly over the water, taking advantage of the abundance of insects on a warm summer's day. Watching them overhead was a reminder of just how perfectly adapted they are to life in the air and why they remain one of my favourite species to photograph during the summer months.
