A Peaceful October Morning at Warnham Local Nature Reserve
On 5th October 2025, I visited Warnham Local Nature Reserve, one of my favourite spots for peaceful wildlife photography. The reserve was full of activity, offering several memorable encounters that made the morning especially rewarding.
Common Snipe in the Open
One of the highlights was spotting a Common Snipe out in the open—a rare treat, as they usually stay well-hidden among the reeds. With nothing obstructing the view, it offered some fantastic opportunities for detailed shots and close observation of its beautifully patterned plumage.
Grey Heron Over the Reedbed
While watching the Snipe, a Grey Heron drifted silently overhead, gliding across the reedbed with that unmistakable, slow wingbeat. Moments like this always capture the calm character of Warnham’s wetlands.
Little Grebe Close Encounters
A Little Grebe also spent time diving near my viewpoint, surfacing every so often with its usual mix of shyness and curiosity. These energetic little birds always make for engaging photography subjects.
Migrant Hawker on Patrol
I was also pleased to photograph a Migrant Hawker patrolling the water’s edge. Dragonflies at this time of year can be unpredictable, so catching this one in motion was a real bonus.
Northern Shoveler Silhouette
The morning wrapped up nicely with a silhouette shot of a Northern Shoveler, its distinctive bill outlined against the light—a simple but striking way to end the session.
Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be a fantastic location for spending a few quiet hours surrounded by wildlife. Each visit brings something different, and this one was no exception.
