A Remarkable Grebe Feeding Moment at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

On 11 October 2025, I experienced one of those unforgettable wildlife moments that remind me exactly why I spend so much time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. As I watched the still water, a Great Crested Grebe surfaced with an enormous fish—far larger than I expected it to be attempting to handle.

What happened next was both fascinating and genuinely funny to witness. Instead of eating the fish itself, the adult grebe offered it to its juvenile. The youngster then attempted to manoeuvre this oversized meal, twisting, turning, and trying to swallow something almost as big as its own head. Moments like these highlight the raw beauty and unpredictability of nature, especially during the juvenile feeding stages.

Warnham has always been a place full of surprises, but this sequence felt particularly special. It’s scenes like this—behavioural interactions, family moments, and unexpected wildlife drama—that make every visit worthwhile.

Below are a few of the photographs from the sequence. I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed capturing this incredible sight.
