Finches in Flight – Warnham Local Nature Reserve

I spent some time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 25 January 2026, enjoying a quiet session with the camera and watching the constant movement of winter finches moving through the trees.

Fleeting Moments in the Air

During the visit, I managed to capture a few brief moments of Goldfinches and Siskins in flight. These small finches are rarely still for long, constantly moving between branches, feeders, and treetops as they search for food.

Photographing birds in flight can be challenging, especially with species this small and fast. Most of the time they appear for only a second or two before disappearing again, but those short bursts of activity are what make the experience so rewarding.

Colour Against the Winter Light

One of the things that stood out most was the flashes of colour as they moved through the woodland. The Goldfinches, with their bright yellow wing bars and red faces, and the Siskins, with their subtle greens and yellows, created striking contrasts against the softer tones of the winter landscape.

When the light catches them just right as they pass through the frame, even a split second can produce a memorable image.

Energy in a Quiet Reserve

Winter at Warnham often feels calm and peaceful, but moments like this remind you just how much activity is happening around you. The quick movements of these finches bring a real sense of energy to the woodland.

Watching them weave through the trees and trying to anticipate their next move is all part of the challenge — and the enjoyment — of wildlife photography.
