Siskins in the Winter Trees – Warnham Local Nature Reserve

I spent a crisp winter morning at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 25 January 2026, and once again the Siskins were out in force.

A Busy Morning in the Trees

These small finches seemed to be everywhere, flitting through the branches and constantly moving between the treetops and feeding spots. Their quick, energetic movements made them a real challenge to photograph, but also a lot of fun to watch.

Despite rarely staying still for long, I managed to capture a few lovely moments of them pausing briefly among the branches.

Bright Colour in the Winter Woodland

One of the things that always stands out about Siskins is how their plumage catches the eye, even in the muted tones of winter. The combination of bright yellow and black feathers contrasts beautifully with the bare branches and soft winter light.

When they gather in numbers like this, the woodland suddenly feels full of movement and colour.

A Joy to Watch

Spending time watching these lively little birds is always rewarding. Their constant activity, soft calls, and flashes of colour bring a real sense of life to the winter landscape.

Moments like these are a reminder that even on the coldest mornings, nature is never truly quiet — you just have to slow down and look closely.
