Great Spotted Woodpecker at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Spent some time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 14th December 2025 and was lucky enough to encounter a Great Spotted Woodpecker moving gracefully between the tree trunks.

Watching this striking bird navigate the woodland was fascinating — each hop, climb, and pause showed just how perfectly adapted it is to its environment. I managed to capture several moments as it darted along the trees, sometimes pausing long enough to admire its bold markings and the contrast of its black, white, and red plumage against the muted winter woodland colours.

It’s always rewarding to slow down and observe these woodland specialists in action. Each movement reveals a little more of their character — from the careful way they inspect the bark to the occasional flick of the tail for balance. Even though Great Spotted Woodpeckers are relatively common here, every encounter feels unique, especially when the light catches them just right.

Visits like this are a reminder of why Warnham is such a joy to explore. Even on a quiet winter morning, the reserve offers dynamic behaviour, striking visuals, and moments that stay with you long after you leave.
