Siskins in the Winter Woodland – Warnham Local Nature Reserve
I spent a crisp and peaceful morning at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 31 January 2026, enjoying the calm of the woodland while watching the constant activity of the winter finches.
Lively Siskins on the Move
One of the highlights of the morning was once again the Siskins, which seemed full of energy as they moved through the trees. These small finches rarely stay still for long, flitting from branch to branch while feeding and calling to one another.
Their quick movements can make them tricky to photograph, but that’s part of the challenge and enjoyment. When they pause just long enough for a frame or two, it always feels like a small success.
Colour in the Winter Trees
Even in the softer tones of winter, Siskins manage to stand out. Their flashes of yellow and green catch the light beautifully as they move through the branches, adding colour and life to the woodland.
Watching them weave through the treetops creates a lively scene, with constant movement and calls echoing quietly through the reserve.
A Peaceful Morning Behind the Camera
Mornings like this are what make winter wildlife photography so rewarding. The paths are quiet, the light is soft, and the woodland feels full of small moments waiting to be noticed.
Spending time observing these energetic little birds, camera in hand, is always a great reminder of just how much life there is in the winter landscape.
