Winter Woodland Birds – Warnham Local Nature Reserve
I spent a lovely morning at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 25 January 2026, enjoying the quiet atmosphere of the winter woodland and photographing a wonderful mix of familiar birds.
Life Among the Branches
The morning began with a Blue Tit flitting between the branches, full of energy as it searched for food among the twigs. These small birds are always busy, rarely pausing for long, but they bring so much life to the woodland.
Nearby, a Chaffinch perched quietly, its warm colours standing out beautifully against the muted tones of the winter background. Moments like that are always a pleasure to capture — a calm pause in an otherwise lively morning.
Colour and Character
A Goldfinch soon appeared, delicately feeding among the branches. Their striking red faces and flashes of yellow always add a burst of colour to the woodland.
Not long after, the distinctive tapping of a Great Spotted Woodpecker echoed through the trees. I eventually spotted it working its way along a trunk, pausing between bursts of rhythmic drumming.
A Greenfinch also showed nicely, sitting quietly in the early morning light. Though often more understated than some of the other finches, they have a subtle beauty that really stands out in good light.
Constant Movement
One of the highlights of the morning was a small group of Long-Tailed Tits moving through the trees. They travelled together in their usual lively flock, darting from branch to branch and rarely stopping for more than a second or two.
Watching them pass through is always entertaining, even if keeping them in the frame can be a challenge.
A Familiar Favourite
To round off the morning, a Nuthatch appeared, confidently climbing along a tree trunk. Their ability to move headfirst down the bark never fails to impress, and they always seem completely unfazed by everything happening around them.
A Morning Full of Small Moments
Each bird seemed to bring its own little story to the morning — brief encounters, quick movements, and quiet pauses among the trees.
Days like this are a reminder of just how much charm and variety can be found in the winter woodland, often right on our doorstep.
