Siskins Steal the Show – Warnham Local Nature Reserve
I returned to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 18 January 2026, and once again the Siskins completely stole the show.
It’s been a particularly good winter for them this year, with strong numbers moving through the reserve. From the moment I arrived, their calls could be heard above the woodland, and the feeders and surrounding trees were alive with movement.
Constant Motion in the Trees
Siskins are never the easiest birds to photograph, and that’s largely because they rarely sit still for long. Small, energetic, and always alert, they constantly flutter between feeders and the higher branches of the trees.
One moment they gather in small clusters, feeding quietly, and the next they burst into motion again, scattering through the canopy before settling somewhere else nearby.
Watching them move through the woodland creates a sense of energy that spreads across the whole area.
Flashes of Yellow in the Winter Light
One of the most striking features of Siskins is the flash of yellow along their wings and tails. When the light catches them at the right angle, those colours stand out beautifully against the softer winter tones of the woodland.
On this particular visit, the low January light helped highlight those markings perfectly. Even brief pauses on a branch created moments where the colour seemed to glow against the background.
Of course, those pauses rarely last long.
The Challenge That Makes It Rewarding
Photographing Siskins always feels like a challenge. Their quick, unpredictable movements demand patience and readiness, and it’s common to miss as many opportunities as you capture.
But that unpredictability is exactly what makes them such rewarding subjects. When everything aligns — a clear perch, good light, and a bird that holds still for just a second — it feels like a well-earned frame.
It’s that balance of challenge and reward that keeps bringing photographers back to them.
A Strong Winter for Siskins
Seeing so many Siskins around this winter has been a real treat. Their presence adds life and colour to the reserve at a time when much of the woodland can appear quiet.
Sessions like this are a great reminder that even small birds can create some of the most engaging wildlife photography opportunities.
Another really enjoyable visit to Warnham, and great to see these lively little finches continuing to thrive this season.
