Winter Wildlife Encounters at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

I spent some time at Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 11 January 2026 and was treated to a series of lovely close encounters with the local wildlife. It was one of those calm winter sessions where the activity builds slowly, with different species appearing throughout the morning.

With soft seasonal light and the woodland relatively quiet, it provided the perfect setting to simply observe and photograph the small moments that make time in nature so rewarding.

A Flash of Colour in the Branches

One of the first birds to appear was a Blue Tit, flitting quickly through the branches. Like most Blue Tits, it rarely stayed still for long, moving energetically from perch to perch.

However, every so often it paused just long enough to reveal that alert, curious expression they always seem to carry. Those brief pauses are often the difference between watching a bird and capturing a photograph.

A Welcome Winter Visitor

Not long after, a Common Redpoll appeared among the branches. These delicate finches are always a welcome sight during the winter months.

With their subtle streaking and the distinctive red crown that gives them their name, they add a gentle splash of colour to the otherwise muted tones of the season. When the light catches them just right, the soft rosy tones in their plumage become even more noticeable.

Seeing a Redpoll settle long enough for a few photographs always feels like a small reward.

Goldfinches Brightening the Day

Goldfinches soon joined the activity, their unmistakable colours standing out clearly among the winter branches.

Even in subdued light, their flashes of red, black, and yellow bring brightness to the woodland. Watching them move through the trees always adds energy to a session, especially when small groups feed together among the seed heads.

An Entertaining Finale

To round off the session, a Grey Squirrel provided a completely different kind of subject. Sitting comfortably with a nut, it seemed entirely focused on its meal, happily ignoring the world around it.

Their relaxed behaviour often makes them surprisingly entertaining to watch, and it offered a nice change of pace after the quicker movements of the birds.

A Quietly Rewarding Day

Days like this may not always include dramatic wildlife moments, but they often deliver something just as valuable — peaceful observation and a variety of small encounters.

Between the colourful finches, energetic woodland birds, and the occasional curious squirrel, it turned into a thoroughly enjoyable time behind the camera.

A calm and rewarding visit to Warnham, and another reminder that there’s always something worth watching if you’re prepared to slow down and look closely.
