A Variety of Wildlife at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Ifield Mill Pond brings something a little different, making it one of those locations that's always worth returning to. On the 12th of April 2026, I was greeted by plenty of bird activity around the water, creating an enjoyable morning with a wonderful variety of photographic opportunities.

Throughout the session, I photographed a group of Coots making their way across the pond, constantly interacting as they swam together. Looking overhead, a Cormorant flew across the sky, offering a completely different photographic challenge as it passed above the reserve. Closer to the water's edge, an Egyptian Goose stood calmly in the shallows, providing a striking contrast to the more active birds around it.

One of the highlights of the visit was watching a Great Crested Grebe out on the open water. These elegant birds are always a pleasure to observe, and seeing one calmly moving across the pond was a memorable sight. Another standout moment came when a Herring Gull swept low across the water, with the very tip of its wing just touching the surface as it glided past. It was one of those split-second moments that perfectly captures the grace and precision of birds in flight.

What I enjoy most about Ifield Mill Pond is its unpredictability. Every visit offers a different combination of species, behaviours, and photographic opportunities, whether it's birds in flight, feeding, or simply going about their daily lives. It's a location that continues to reward patience and observation, making it one of my favourite local places to spend time behind the camera.
