Sparrowhawk in Flight at Ifield Mill Pond
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Ifield Mill Pond has the potential to produce something unexpected, and my visit on 18th April 2026 certainly delivered. What began as a peaceful morning quickly turned into an exciting encounter with one of Britain's most impressive birds of prey.
The first sighting happened in an instant as a Sparrowhawk flew directly past me with prey held firmly in its talons. There was barely enough time to react, but I managed to capture a photograph as it powered away. Encounters like this are over in seconds, making every successful image feel all the more rewarding.
Later in the day, I was fortunate enough to spot the Sparrowhawk again, this time soaring high above the pond. With a little more time to prepare, I was able to follow its flight and capture several images as it passed overhead. Watching the effortless speed, agility, and strength of this remarkable raptor was a real privilege and a reminder of just how skilled these hunters are.
Moments like these are what keep me returning to Ifield Mill Pond. You never know what wildlife will appear next, and every visit offers another opportunity to witness nature at its most captivating.
