Beautiful Demoiselles at Woods Mill Nature Reserve – A Stunning Damselfly Encounter
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Woods Mill Nature Reserve is a wonderful location for discovering the smaller details of the natural world, and my visit on 25th May 2026 provided the perfect opportunity to spend time photographing one of the UK’s most beautiful damselflies.
During the visit, I was lucky enough to capture both a male and female Beautiful Demoiselle. These stunning insects are always a pleasure to watch, especially when they are found around the streams and waterways where they thrive. The male was particularly impressive, with his dark, iridescent wings catching the sunlight and creating a beautiful shimmering effect as he moved through the vegetation. The female was equally striking, with her delicate metallic green body and warm brown-tinted wings creating a wonderful contrast.
Photographing damselflies is all about patience and observation. Taking the time to watch their behaviour, understand where they like to perch, and wait for the right moment can make all the difference. Seeing both sexes together at Woods Mill made for a fantastic wildlife photography session and a great reminder of the incredible diversity that can be found in our local nature reserves.
Moments like this highlight why exploring smaller habitats can be just as rewarding as visiting larger wildlife locations. There is always something fascinating to discover, from birds and mammals to the tiny insects that play such an important role in our ecosystems.
Thanks for reading! Be sure to explore my other wildlife adventures and photography from Woods Mill Nature Reserve and beyond. Every visit brings new discoveries, and I look forward to sharing more moments from the field soon.
