Brimstone Butterfly at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Welcome Sign of Spring

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a special place to visit, with each season bringing new opportunities to observe and photograph the changing wildlife. On 19th April 2026, I spent some time exploring the reserve and was delighted to find one of the first butterflies of the year enjoying the spring sunshine.

The Brimstone butterfly is a wonderful symbol of the changing seasons, often appearing earlier than many other butterfly species. Their bright yellow wings stand out beautifully against the fresh greens of spring growth, making them a welcome sight after the quieter months of winter. Despite their striking appearance, they can be surprisingly challenging to photograph, as they rarely stay still for long while searching for nectar among the flowers.

Taking the time to watch this Brimstone moving through the reserve was a real pleasure, and moments like this highlight the rewards of slowing down and paying attention to the smaller details of nature. Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide fantastic opportunities to discover wildlife throughout the year, from birds and mammals to the many insects that bring the landscape to life.
