Chasing Swifts at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is one of those special local locations where patience and observation can lead to some incredible wildlife encounters. On 14th June 2026, I spent time watching one of nature’s most impressive aerial performers — the Swift — as they raced through the skies above the pond.

These incredible birds are built for speed and agility, spending much of their lives in flight as they hunt for insects and interact with each other high above the landscape. Photographing them is always a challenge, as their rapid movements, sudden changes of direction, and incredible acceleration make tracking them through the viewfinder extremely difficult. Trying to capture the exact moment when they twist, turn, or chase each other through the air requires patience, timing, and plenty of practice.

Despite the challenges, this is what makes photographing Swifts so rewarding. Every successful image represents a small moment captured from a fast-moving display that only lasts a fraction of a second. Watching their behaviour unfold also highlights the importance of spending time in familiar places, as even well-known locations can reveal something new when you slow down and observe what is happening around you.

Ifield Mill Pond once again proved that some of the best wildlife photography opportunities can be found close to home. It’s not always about travelling to distant locations — sometimes the most memorable encounters happen simply by returning to places you know and waiting for nature to provide the moment.
