Coastal Bird Photography Highlights at Pagham Harbour

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Pagham Harbour is one of the most rewarding coastal locations for bird photography, offering a wonderful mix of habitats and a fantastic variety of species throughout the year. My visit on 17th May 2026 provided plenty of opportunities to capture some memorable moments, with the harbour alive with bird activity and movement.

One of the highlights of the day was watching Ringed Plovers speeding across the shoreline in flight, their quick movements and energetic behaviour making them a challenging but rewarding subject to photograph. The elegant Common Terns also provided a fantastic display, hovering effortlessly above the water before diving beneath the surface in pursuit of fish. Their precision and timing are always incredible to witness.

The mudflats were full of activity, with Dunlin moving quickly across the shoreline and showing the agility that makes them such fascinating little waders to observe. Another standout moment came when a Great Crested Grebe took to the air, offering a rare opportunity to capture this beautiful bird in flight. Little Egrets also provided excellent photographic opportunities as they moved between feeding areas, while Oystercatchers added a splash of colour with their striking black-and-white plumage and bright orange bills.

Visits to Pagham Harbour always remind me why coastal reserves are such special places for wildlife photography. The combination of changing tides, rich feeding areas, and a constant variety of bird species means there is always something new to discover and capture.
