Common Tern Fishing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a fantastic place to observe bird behaviour, and on 23rd May 2026, I spent some time photographing one of our most elegant and skilful fishing birds — the Common Tern. The reserve provided a wonderful opportunity to watch these incredible hunters as they went about their daily routine.

Throughout the session, I was able to capture a variety of behaviours that showcase the remarkable abilities of these birds. The Common Terns hovered effortlessly above the water, carefully scanning for their next meal before plunging down at incredible speed. Watching them disappear beneath the surface and then reappear moments later with a freshly caught fish was a fantastic display of precision and timing.

The agility and accuracy of these birds never fail to impress. Their ability to judge the perfect moment to dive, combined with their speed and control in flight, highlights just how specialised they are as hunters. Each movement, from hovering above the water to carrying a successful catch, demonstrates the incredible adaptations that make the Common Tern such a fascinating species to photograph.

Sessions like this are what make visits to Warnham Local Nature Reserve so rewarding. Being able to spend time observing these beautiful birds in their natural environment and capturing their behaviour through photography is always a privilege.
