Common Tern Carrying a Large Fish at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife, and my visit on 25th July 2026 provided some fantastic opportunities to photograph Common Terns in flight.

There were plenty of chances to capture the terns as they flew around the reserve, but the highlight of the visit was watching one carrying an impressively large fish. Seeing the tern manage to remain airborne while carrying such a substantial catch was fascinating to watch and made for some particularly rewarding flight photography. The size of the fish compared with the bird made the moment even more impressive.

Photographing birds in flight is always challenging, particularly when trying to keep a fast-moving subject in focus and frame the action at just the right moment. A Common Tern carrying a large fish certainly adds another level of difficulty, but it also makes the effort worthwhile when everything comes together.

Moments like this are exactly what make wildlife photography so enjoyable. You never quite know what you might see during a visit, and being ready when something unexpected happens can result in some of the most memorable photographs.
