Coot in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – An Unexpected Sight

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place where I regularly photograph a wide variety of wildlife, but even familiar species can sometimes provide an unexpected surprise. On 25th July 2026, I was lucky enough to witness one of those moments when a Coot took to the air above the lake.

Coots are much more commonly seen swimming across the water, feeding around the edges of the lake, or walking through the vegetation. Seeing one flying surprisingly high above the water was therefore a rather unusual sight, and it provided a great opportunity to photograph this familiar wetland bird from a completely different perspective.

The Coot flew against the backdrop of the reeds, creating a series of images that showed its wings in action and captured a side of its behaviour that I don't often get the chance to photograph. It's easy to overlook common birds because we see them so regularly, but moments like this are a good reminder that even familiar species can still surprise you.

Photography isn't always about finding rare or unusual wildlife. Sometimes it's about being ready when something unexpected happens in front of you. This encounter with the Coot was a perfect example — a normally familiar bird suddenly became a much more interesting photographic subject simply because it was doing something I don't often see.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide plenty of opportunities like this, and it's often the unexpected moments that become some of the most enjoyable photographs from a visit.
