Common Tern Juveniles at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always a fantastic place to observe wildlife throughout the seasons, and every visit offers something different. On 27th June 2026, I spent time photographing one of the reserve's summer highlights as a group of Common Tern juveniles filled the skies with activity.

The young terns were full of energy, constantly flying around the reserve as they developed their flying skills and explored the world beyond the nest. Their speed, agility, and unpredictable changes of direction made photographing them both exciting and challenging. Every pass overhead demanded complete concentration, with fast autofocus and accurate timing essential to capture sharp images of these impressive young birds in flight.

One of the most rewarding aspects of wildlife photography is witnessing young birds gaining confidence as they become more independent. These juvenile Common Terns were beginning to master the aerial skills that make the species such remarkable hunters, and it was fascinating to watch them interact with both their surroundings and the adult birds nearby. Experiences like this offer a glimpse into an important stage of their development and remind us how successful breeding seasons contribute to the future of our native wildlife.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide outstanding opportunities for wildlife photography, with each visit offering new behaviour to observe and document. Encounters like this are a perfect reminder that some of the most memorable photographs come not from rare species, but from taking the time to appreciate the everyday wonders of nature.
