Broad-Bodied Chaser Dragonfly at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of those places that never fails to offer something interesting, whether you're looking for birds, mammals, or insects. On the 27th of June 2026, one of the highlights of my visit was spending time photographing the impressive Broad-Bodied Chaser, one of the UK's most recognisable dragonflies.

These powerful dragonflies are always a fantastic subject to encounter. Their broad, stocky bodies, striking blue colouring in the males, and remarkable aerial agility make them both beautiful and challenging to photograph. They spend much of their time patrolling their territory, often returning to the same favourite perch between flights. Those brief moments when they settle provide the perfect opportunity to appreciate the intricate detail of their wings, the texture of their bodies, and the vivid colours that make this species stand out.

Photographing dragonflies requires patience and careful observation. Learning their behaviour and anticipating where they'll land can make all the difference, and it's always satisfying when everything comes together to capture a sharp image. Encounters like this remind me that some of the reserve's most rewarding photographic subjects aren't always the largest or rarest, but often the insects quietly going about their lives around the ponds.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to showcase an incredible diversity of wildlife throughout the seasons, and the Broad-Bodied Chaser is always a welcome sight during the summer months. Every visit offers the chance to discover something different, making it a location I never tire of returning to.
