Common Tern Taking Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place where patience and observation often reveal some of the most rewarding wildlife moments. On 23rd May 2026, I spent time focusing on the behaviour and movement of a Common Tern, capturing the sequence of events as it repeatedly left the water after feeding.

Rather than concentrating on just a single image, I wanted to capture the story of the behaviour — the repeated passes, quick dips into the water, and the powerful moment when the tern lifted back into the air. The key moment was the transition between feeding and flight, when the bird broke contact with the surface, wings driving downwards as it rose cleanly into the air with droplets of water still trailing behind.

Working through a series of photographs of the same action gave a much better sense of rhythm and movement. Each take-off was slightly different, with subtle changes in wing position, body angle, and the trail of water left behind. These small differences help show the energy and precision involved in such a simple but impressive behaviour.

Moments like this are a reminder that wildlife photography is not always about finding a rare species — sometimes it is about spending time with a familiar bird and documenting the incredible details of everyday behaviour. A rewarding session of observation, patience, and capturing nature in motion at Warnham Local Nature Reserve.
