Kingfisher Hovering Before the Dive at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place I return to time and time again, and one of the things that makes it so special is that every visit can bring a completely different experience. On 23rd May 2026, I was lucky enough to witness and photograph one of those unforgettable moments that makes wildlife photography so rewarding.

A Kingfisher provided the highlight of the day as it hovered above the water, holding perfectly still before making its dive. Watching this beautiful bird suspend itself in the air for a brief moment, almost frozen in time, before dropping straight down in a flash of colour was incredible to witness. It is a behaviour that happens quickly and without warning, making it one of the most exciting moments to capture.

Photographing a hovering Kingfisher is always a challenge. The timing has to be perfect, the focus needs to stay locked, and there is only a small window to capture the action before the bird disappears beneath the surface. But when everything comes together and you capture that split-second moment, it makes all the patience and preparation worthwhile.

It was a simple but very special encounter with a truly remarkable bird, and another reminder of why Warnham Local Nature Reserve remains such a rewarding place for wildlife photography. No two visits ever feel the same, and there is always the possibility of witnessing something extraordinary.
