Common Terns Fishing at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve in West Sussex is one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife throughout the year, and every visit offers something different. On 6th June 2026, one of the highlights of my day was spending time watching the Common Terns as they hunted over the reserve's lakes during the breeding season.

These elegant birds are among the most skilful aerial hunters found at the reserve. Hovering effortlessly above the water, they carefully search for their next meal before folding their wings and plunging headfirst beneath the surface. Seeing this behaviour up close is always impressive, but capturing the moment a tern emerges with a freshly caught fish is especially rewarding. It perfectly demonstrates the speed, precision, and remarkable hunting abilities that make this species such a pleasure to observe.

During the breeding season, the lakes at Warnham are full of activity as the Common Terns work tirelessly to provide food for themselves and their young. Every successful catch tells part of their story, highlighting the constant effort and energy required to thrive. Spending time quietly watching their behaviour not only provides wonderful photographic opportunities but also a greater appreciation for the lives of these remarkable birds.

Days like this are a reminder that wildlife photography is about far more than simply taking pictures. It's about observing, learning, and enjoying those fleeting moments that nature offers to anyone willing to be patient.
