Coot Territorial Dispute at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a place where even the most familiar species can reveal fascinating behaviour when you take the time to observe. During my visit on 6th June 2026, I witnessed a dramatic encounter between two Coots that showed a very different side to these usually calm-looking wetland birds.

Although Coots are often seen quietly gliding across the water, they can become surprisingly aggressive, especially during the breeding season when territories and nesting areas need to be defended. This encounter quickly turned into a noisy confrontation, with the birds charging across the water, flapping their wings, and striking out with their feet as they attempted to force the rival away.

Watching this behaviour unfold was a great reminder that there is always something happening in nature if you are patient enough to look closely. These brief moments of interaction can be challenging to photograph, requiring quick reactions and good timing, but capturing such natural behaviour makes the effort worthwhile.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide incredible opportunities to witness the hidden stories of the wildlife that calls it home. From quiet moments of feeding to intense territorial displays, every visit can reveal something new.
