Firecrest and Robin at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers something different, and that's one of the reasons I enjoy returning throughout the year. On the 3rd of April 2026, I was treated to two wonderful encounters that made for a memorable day behind the camera.

The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly a beautiful Firecrest. As one of the UK's smallest breeding birds, it's easy to overlook, but its vibrant crown stripe and energetic behaviour make it an unforgettable species to watch. Rarely staying still for more than a moment, it moved quickly through the branches, constantly searching for insects among the foliage. Photographing a Firecrest is always a rewarding challenge, requiring patience, quick reactions, and a little bit of luck when it finally pauses long enough for a photograph.

Alongside the Firecrest, I also spent some time with one of Britain's most familiar and much-loved garden birds, the Robin. Unlike its tiny woodland companion, the Robin was far more accommodating, happily posing for a series of photographs. Their curious and confident nature often allows for close encounters, and they never fail to add a touch of charm to a day spent exploring the reserve.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to be one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife, with every season bringing new opportunities and different species to discover. Whether it's a rare glimpse of a Firecrest or the familiar sight of a Robin, every visit offers another reminder of just how special this reserve is for wildlife photography.
