Shelduck in Flight at Farlington Marshes

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Farlington Marshes offers something different, and one of the joys of spending time here is never knowing what photographic opportunities will present themselves. On the 5th of April 2026, I was treated to a wonderful encounter with a Shelduck in flight, making for a memorable moment during the day's photography.

There is always something special about photographing birds in flight, and the Shelduck is one of the UK's most distinctive and elegant waterfowl. Its bold black, white, chestnut, and green plumage makes it instantly recognisable, while its strong, purposeful flight creates a striking subject against the open skies and wetlands of the marshes. Capturing birds in flight is never easy, requiring quick reactions, accurate focus, and a little patience, but it's incredibly satisfying when everything comes together.

Watching this beautiful bird soar effortlessly over the reserve was one of the highlights of the day. Moments like these are a reminder of why I enjoy wildlife photography so much—not just for the images themselves, but for the opportunity to observe the behaviour and beauty of these remarkable birds in their natural environment.

Farlington Marshes continues to be one of my favourite locations for wildlife photography, with its diverse habitats attracting an impressive variety of bird species throughout the year. Whether it's resident birds or seasonal visitors, every trip offers new experiences and fresh photographic opportunities, making it a place I always look forward to returning to.
