Gadwalls in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! A visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 2nd August 2026 provided another enjoyable opportunity to spend some time photographing the wildlife around the reserve. Although Gadwalls are a familiar sight, watching them in flight offered a different perspective on these often understated ducks.

Gadwalls are frequently seen swimming quietly around the reserve, moving calmly across the water as they go about their day. However, catching them in flight reveals a completely different side to these birds. I particularly enjoyed watching for those moments when they lifted off the water, giving me the chance to capture their wings fully extended as they took to the air.

Photographing birds as they take off is always an enjoyable challenge. There is often very little warning before the action begins, so being ready and watching their behaviour closely can make all the difference. When everything comes together and you manage to capture the bird at just the right moment, it can turn a familiar species into a much more interesting photographic subject.

It was another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, making the most of whatever opportunities the reserve had to offer on the day. Even with familiar birds such as Gadwalls, there is always something different to photograph when you take the time to watch and wait for the right moment.
