Great Crested Grebe and Coot Territorial Battle at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a wonderful local wildlife site, and every visit brings the possibility of witnessing something unexpected. On 18th April 2026, I spent some time exploring the pond and was treated to some fantastic wildlife action, with one particular encounter standing out from the rest.

The highlight of the visit was watching and photographing a Great Crested Grebe and a Coot involved in a heated confrontation on the water. What began as a territorial dispute quickly developed into an impressive display of determination from both birds, with splashing, chasing, and plenty of energetic movement as neither seemed willing to give way.

Wildlife behaviour like this is always fascinating to witness, as it offers a glimpse into the challenges birds face as they defend their space and establish their place within their environment. Capturing these moments requires patience and observation, but it is these unpredictable encounters that make wildlife photography so rewarding.

Alongside this dramatic display, it was a pleasure to spend time at Ifield Mill Pond enjoying the variety of wildlife the area has to offer. Moments like these are a reminder that there is always something interesting happening in nature if you slow down, watch carefully, and give wildlife the time it deserves.
