Great Crested Grebes Performing Their Weed Dance at Ifield Mill Pond

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Ifield Mill Pond is a fantastic location for observing and photographing wildlife, and my visit on 18th April 2026 provided one of those unforgettable moments that makes spending time outdoors with a camera so rewarding.

I was fortunate enough to witness and photograph a pair of Great Crested Grebes performing their famous weed dance — one of the most spectacular courtship displays found in British birdlife. Watching the pair move together across the water, mirroring each other’s movements before rising up and presenting weeds and aquatic plants, was an incredible experience. Their coordination, timing, and connection during this display are a wonderful example of the fascinating behaviours that make the breeding season such a special time for wildlife photography.

Moments like this are exactly why patience and time spent in the field are so important. Being able to observe natural behaviour unfold in front of you and capture even a small part of that moment through photography is always a privilege. The Great Crested Grebe’s courtship display is something truly special, and witnessing it at Ifield Mill Pond was a memorable reminder of the beauty that can be found in our local wildlife.
