Green Woodpecker in Flight at Bushy Park – A First Visit

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Visiting a new location is always exciting, as you never quite know what wildlife encounters await. On 19th July 2026, I made my first visit to Bushy Park, and it quickly delivered a memorable photography opportunity with one of the UK’s most distinctive woodland birds.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a Green Woodpecker moving through the trees. I managed to capture a few images as it flew between the branches, revealing those flashes of green and yellow as it passed through the woodland. Seeing this beautiful bird in motion was a special moment, especially as Green Woodpeckers are often easier to hear than to photograph in flight.

Capturing birds flying through woodland is always a challenge, with constantly changing backgrounds, quick movements, and only brief opportunities to get the shot. However, these are exactly the moments that make wildlife photography so rewarding — the combination of patience, timing, and being ready when nature presents an opportunity.

Exploring Bushy Park for the first time was a fantastic experience, and it was great to discover the variety of wildlife this new location has to offer. Encounters like this are a reminder that every visit to a new place can bring unexpected and memorable moments behind the camera.
