Grey Heron Action at Warnham Local Nature Reserve – Landing and a Dramatic Fight
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always capable of producing unexpected wildlife encounters, and my visit on 26th July 2026 was no exception. With the camera ready, I was able to capture a Grey Heron in two very different moments during the session.
The first opportunity came as the Grey Heron flew in to land, giving me the chance to photograph the bird as it approached and settled. Watching these large birds come into land is always interesting, with their long legs, broad wings, and distinctive flight making for some great photographic opportunities.
Later in the visit, things became considerably more dramatic when the same heron became involved in a fight with another Grey Heron. What started as a relatively peaceful session quickly turned into an impressive display of aggression, with the two birds clashing and creating a large splash of water as they battled. The head splash captured in the photographs really shows the intensity of the encounter and provides a very different view of these normally quiet-looking birds.
Wildlife photography is often about being in the right place and being ready when something unexpected happens. While a Grey Heron quietly standing around the reserve may be a familiar sight, seeing two birds suddenly become involved in a territorial dispute is a completely different experience. These moments also make it clear that there is much more to their behaviour than their calm appearance might suggest.
Another enjoyable session at Warnham Local Nature Reserve, with plenty of action to keep the camera busy and another reminder that you never quite know what you might witness when spending time watching wildlife.
