Grey Heron Catches Two Marsh Frogs at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve never fails to surprise me, and my visit on 10th May 2026 delivered one of those unforgettable wildlife moments that you hope for every time you step into the field. Watching natural behaviour unfold in front of the camera is always special, but some encounters are truly exceptional.

While observing a Grey Heron hunting, I witnessed an incredible sequence of events. The heron suddenly struck into the water and emerged with not one, but two Marsh Frogs firmly held in its beak. Moments like this happen incredibly quickly, and there is often only a split second to react and capture what is happening. Fortunately, I managed to follow the action as the heron took flight directly towards the camera, still carrying both frogs.

The drama continued as the heron landed, and one of the frogs slipped from its grasp, leaving the bird with just a single meal. I was then able to photograph the heron as it began swallowing the remaining Marsh Frog, offering a fascinating insight into the realities of survival and feeding behaviour in the natural world.

Encounters like this are what make wildlife photography so rewarding. A combination of patience, observation, and a little bit of luck can sometimes result in capturing behaviour that is rarely seen, let alone photographed. Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to provide incredible opportunities to witness and document the amazing wildlife that calls it home.
