Hobby High Above Warnham Local Nature Reserve – A Challenging Flight Photograph
Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is always capable of producing unexpected photographic opportunities, and my visit on 25th July 2026 provided one of those challenging encounters. While looking high above the reserve, I spotted a Hobby flying across the sky and managed to get the camera on it.
The Hobby was incredibly high, making it a real challenge to capture enough detail for a usable photograph. At such extreme distances, even a high-resolution image can require a significant crop, and these photographs are certainly no exception. Despite that, I was pleased to retain enough detail to show the distinctive shape and features of this beautiful falcon in flight.
Photographing wildlife at extreme distances isn't always about filling the frame with the subject. Sometimes it's simply about being in the right place at the right time, spotting a bird as it passes overhead, and managing to get the shot before it disappears. Those opportunities can be fleeting, and capturing a record of the encounter can be just as rewarding as producing a frame-filling image.
The Hobby may have been a long way away on this occasion, but seeing this impressive falcon flying high above Warnham Local Nature Reserve made the effort worthwhile. It's another reminder that wildlife photography isn't always about perfect conditions — sometimes it's about making the most of whatever opportunity nature gives you.
