House Sparrows Hunting Newly Emerged Damselflies at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Every visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve offers the chance to witness something different, and on 13th June 2026 I was lucky enough to observe one of those fascinating wildlife interactions that only lasts for a few moments but leaves a lasting impression.

One of the highlights of the day was watching a group of House Sparrows taking full advantage of the abundance of newly emerged damselflies. As the delicate insects left the water and took to the air for the very first time, the sparrows reacted almost instantly. With incredible speed and precision, they intercepted the damselflies in mid-flight, demonstrating just how adaptable and opportunistic these familiar birds can be.

The whole event unfolded in a matter of seconds. Newly emerged damselflies were making their maiden flights while the sparrows continuously scanned the air for their next opportunity. It created a remarkable spectacle of predator and prey, offering a glimpse into the complex relationships that exist within even the smallest habitats. Capturing the behaviour on camera was a real challenge, as both the birds and insects were moving so quickly, but witnessing it first-hand was every bit as rewarding as coming away with photographs.

It's easy to overlook House Sparrows because they're such a common sight in our towns and gardens, but moments like these reveal another side to their behaviour. They are highly skilled hunters when the opportunity presents itself, making the most of seasonal food sources to feed themselves and, at this time of year, their growing families.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve continues to surprise me with encounters like this. It's a reminder that you don't always need to travel to remote locations to experience remarkable wildlife behaviour—sometimes it's happening right in front of you, hidden within the everyday lives of some of Britain's most familiar species.
