Common Terns in Flight at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Some birds never fail to impress, and for me, the Common Tern is certainly one of them. During a visit to Warnham Local Nature Reserve on 13th June 2026, I spent time photographing these elegant birds as they hunted over the water, taking advantage of the excellent opportunities the reserve provided.

There's something truly special about watching Common Terns in flight. Their incredible speed, pinpoint precision and effortless manoeuvrability make them one of my favourite species to photograph. Whether they're hovering briefly before plunging towards the water or banking sharply to change direction, every movement is perfectly adapted for catching fish. While they make flying look effortless, photographing them is anything but easy, making every successful image feel like a real achievement.

Rather than constantly following them with the camera, I spent time observing their behaviour first. By watching where they regularly patrolled, hovered and dived, I was able to anticipate their movements and improve my chances of capturing them at just the right moment. Taking the time to understand a bird's behaviour is often just as important as having the right camera settings, and it's one of the aspects of wildlife photography I enjoy the most.

Warnham Local Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to experience this kind of wildlife behaviour, offering the opportunity to slow down, observe and appreciate these remarkable birds in their natural environment. Every visit is different, and days like this are a reminder that patience, fieldcraft and persistence often lead to the most rewarding photographs.
