Kingfisher Emerging from the Water at Warnham Local Nature Reserve

Welcome to my wildlife photography journal! Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places to photograph wildlife, and on 22nd August 2026 I spent some time watching and photographing a Kingfisher as it dived into the water and emerged again.

Watching a Kingfisher dive is always fascinating, but capturing the moment it breaks back through the surface is a completely different challenge. Everything happens incredibly quickly, with only a fraction of a second to react and catch the bird in the right position. There is no opportunity to carefully compose the shot once the dive has begun — it all comes down to timing, anticipation and keeping the bird in the frame.

I was particularly pleased to capture a series of images showing the Kingfisher emerging from the water, with droplets still flying around it as it began its return to the perch. These small details really help bring the action to life and show just how fast these dives happen.

It is moments like this that I really enjoy trying to capture when photographing wildlife. You can watch the behaviour unfold in front of you, but turning that fleeting moment into a photograph that tells the story is what makes the challenge so rewarding.
